Crypto Gateway Index

OpenNode vs Coinbase Commerce

Two narrow products aimed at opposite ends of crypto. OpenNode does Bitcoin and Lightning with free conversion. Coinbase Commerce settles everything on chain into USDC. Neither is a general purpose gateway and the choice follows from what you want to end up holding.

Каждая строка — один критерий на общей шкале 0–10. Расстояние между точками — расхождение; там, где они совпадают, провайдеры оценены одинаково. Веса опубликованы на странице методики и меняют этот порядок, когда вы меняете их.

What does each one leave in your account?#

OpenNode converts Bitcoin into one of eight named fiat currencies at no stated conversion cost, then pays a bank account. You end up with money in a bank, which is the conventional shape.

Coinbase Commerce converts on chain into USDC. You end up with a dollar denominated token on Base, Ethereum, Polygon or Solana. That is stable in value and immediately usable on chain, and it is not a bank balance.

Which asset restriction hurts more?#

OpenNode accepts Bitcoin and nothing else. A customer holding a stablecoin has no path at all, which for most consumer businesses ends the evaluation before any other criterion applies.

Coinbase Commerce accepts around ten assets across four networks, so it covers stablecoin demand and does not cover the long tail. Neither provider is a candidate for a merchant who needs breadth, and the catalogue has the ones that are.

Where does small ticket volume go?#

To OpenNode, if the business is Bitcoin denominated. Lightning settles in seconds at negligible cost, which is the only version of small-ticket Bitcoin acceptance that works. On-chain economics do not.

For small stablecoin payments, Coinbase Commerce on a fast network does the same job. The comparison is really between two answers to the same problem, arrived at from different assets.

How do the counterparty questions differ?#

Coinbase Commerce sits inside a listed company whose finances are public, which makes it the easiest counterparty in this index to explain to a board or an auditor.

OpenNode publishes less about itself and is a smaller company. That is not a criticism, and it does mean the diligence falls to you. The custody guide covers what to ask when a provider holds funds between receipt and settlement.

Two narrow products, differently narrow#

OpenNode is narrow by asset: one, plus its Lightning network. Coinbase Commerce is narrow by settlement: everything arrives as USDC regardless of what the customer sent.

Both constraints are deliberate and both simplify the product considerably. Whether either suits you is a question about your customers and your accounts rather than about payments.

What the disclosure figures say#

Both sit at 68% and 58% respectively, which is at or below the index average, and both withhold most of the feature surface. For providers this specialised that matters less than usual, because the specialisation itself answers most of what you would otherwise ask.

The question that remains for both is the same: what does it cost, in total, for the specific thing you intend to do.

What to send both of them#

Ask OpenNode for its processing rate and its confirmation policy. Ask Coinbase Commerce what happens between USDC on a chain and money in your bank, and whether your vertical passes compliance.

Both are narrow products, so the questions are narrower than usual and the answers should be quick. A slow or vague reply from a specialised provider about its own specialism is itself informative.

If your customers hold anything other than Bitcoin, this comparison resolves before either answer arrives.

Reading this pair by business type#

A Bitcoin-only business takes OpenNode. A business that wants stable value and works on chain takes Coinbase Commerce. There is very little overlap, which makes this one of the cleaner comparisons in the index.

A retail counter takes OpenNode if it is Bitcoin-denominated and looks elsewhere entirely if it is not, since Coinbase Commerce publishes nothing about point of sale.

A business that needs money in a bank should read neither card as a complete answer, because both stop short of that step in different ways.

What would change this comparison#

OpenNode publishing a processing rate, which is conspicuous by its absence on an otherwise precise pricing page. Coinbase Commerce documenting the path from USDC to a bank balance would close the other side.

Both providers are narrow by design, so neither gap is likely to change who each one suits.

If you only do one thing#

Decide whether your business is Bitcoin-denominated. That single answer routes you to one provider or the other, and there is almost no case where both remain candidates after it.

What this comparison leaves open#

Unresolved is what either provider does for a business that eventually needs bank currency. OpenNode converts and pays a bank in eight named currencies; Coinbase Commerce stops at USDC. That is not a gap in the comparison so much as a gap in the second product, and it is worth naming explicitly.

Both are narrow products whose scope is unlikely to change quickly, which makes this one of the more durable comparisons here. The rates are still worth re-checking.

Two narrow lists for different reasons#

OpenNode supports Bitcoin and Lightning; Coinbase Commerce publishes around ten assets across Base, Ethereum, Polygon, Solana and Bitcoin. Neither is a broad processor and they are narrow in opposite directions.

One is depth on a single asset including a second-layer network; the other is a contemporary spread covering where stablecoin activity happens. A merchant choosing between them is choosing which kind of customer to serve.

What each publishes about cost#

OpenNode publishes no processing rate and states a zero conversion fee. Coinbase Commerce publishes 1% processing and nothing about conversion. Between them they cover the two halves of the question and neither covers both.

A stated zero on conversion is a stronger claim than a low number, and it is rare in this index. Get the processing figure in writing and the OpenNode card becomes the more computable of the two.

Вопросы, которые задают мерчанты

Can OpenNode accept stablecoins?

No. It supports Bitcoin on chain and over Lightning, and nothing else. A customer wanting to pay in USDT or USDC has no route, which disqualifies it for most consumer businesses.

Does Coinbase Commerce pay into a bank account?

It settles on chain into USDC rather than into a bank. Getting from USDC to a bank balance is a separate step you arrange, which OpenNode does for you within its single supported asset.

Кто дешевле: OpenNode или Coinbase Commerce?
