Where does the term come from?

It predates crypto by decades. In technology sales it described a competitive tactic of spreading doubt about a rival product rather than arguing on merits.

Crypto adopted it and broadened it, and the glossary collects the rest of the vocabulary. The current usage covers coordinated negative campaigns, ordinary bad news, and any critical statement the speaker would prefer went unmade.

Why does the distinction matter?

Because the label is used to end conversations. A specific factual claim, that a company failed to publish reserves or that a rate changed without notice, is checkable. Answering it with FUD replaces a checkable claim with an unfalsifiable one about motive.

For anyone evaluating a payment provider in the catalogue this matters practically. Criticism of a provider is worth checking against sources rather than sorting into sincere and malicious, and a provider whose response to a documented criticism is to name it FUD has told you how the next dispute will go.

What is the opposite?

The community term is FOMO, fear of missing out, describing sentiment pushing in the other direction. Both are descriptions of mood rather than of evidence, and neither belongs in a decision about where to route revenue. Our method uses published figures instead.

How to use the word usefully

Ask what specific claim is being called FUD, then check that claim against a source. Either it holds or it does not, and the label adds nothing either way.

For provider evaluation this is a concrete test rather than a debating point. A criticism naming a page and a date can be verified in a minute. One that cannot be pinned to anything checkable is not evidence, whether it is hostile or sincere, and neither is the accusation that it is FUD.
