Self hosted and non custodial crypto payment gateways
NOWPayments leads this list at 8.0 of 10. BTCPay Server follows at 7.7, then Bitcart at 7.1. Providers documented as never holding merchant funds, what custody actually changes about your risk, and what going non custodial costs you in return.
How this list was built
Providers documented as non custodial, meaning settlement reaches a merchant-controlled wallet rather than a provider balance.

On this page
Non-custodial is the property, self-hosted is the marketing#
Merchants search for self-hosted and mean one of two things: software running on their own server, or a provider that never touches their money. The second is the property that matters and the one this list is built on.
Two providers here, BTCPay Server and Bitcart, are genuinely software you install. The others are services whose settlement routes to a wallet you control rather than to a balance they hold. The non-custodial entry covers the distinction, and it is worth being precise about before shopping.
What custody actually removes#
The failure you cannot recover from. A custodial provider that loses banking, freezes accounts or fails outright takes your balance with it, and no contract term reverses that in practice. A non-custodial provider failing costs you an integration and nothing else.
That is a larger consideration than any fee on this page, which is why the custody guide argues for settling it before comparing rates. It is also the reason this list is short: only a small minority of the catalogue documents the property.
What it hands you in exchange#
Key management, which is a real operational burden and the reason most merchants do not want it. Funds arriving in a wallet you control means a wallet you must back up, secure and be able to recover, and the failure modes there are permanent too.
The key security guide covers the minimum: where the seed lives, who has access, and what happens when the person holding it leaves. A business that cannot answer the third question should not take custody of its own revenue.
Fiat settlement mostly goes away#
A provider that never holds your funds is not the shape that delivers euro to your bank account on a schedule, and none of the seven documents fiat settlement. Payments arrive as crypto and converting is your problem.
For a business already comfortable holding stablecoins that is a non-issue. For one whose finance function prices in bank currency it is a substantial extra workflow, and the volatility guide covers what carrying that exposure costs even briefly.
The seven, and how they differ#
NOWPayments is the broad option, publishing the widest asset list in this index at a flat 1%, with hosted invoicing, recurring billing and point of sale on top of the non-custodial base.
Plisio pairs non-custodial settlement with maintained plugins for five ecommerce platforms and a low published entry rate, which is an unusual combination and the practical choice for a shop rather than an API.
Apirone charges nothing to accept and a fixed fee on withdrawal, and Blockonomics is the narrowest card here, with most of its fields unpublished. Both are Bitcoin-centred rather than general-purpose.
BTCPay Server is the only one you run yourself, at no fee and with no company in the path, which buys the strongest version of the property on this page and costs an engineer’s attention indefinitely. DePay does the same job on smart-contract chains, publishing 1.5% managed and zero percent self-hosted, and GoUrl forwards to your own addresses at 1.5% with no verification at all.
Check what non-custodial means at each one#
The term is not standardised. Some providers generate addresses from a key you supply and never see funds at all; others route through an intermediate address they control for moments or hours. The second is materially different and is still described as non-custodial.
Ask directly whether any address in the payment path is controlled by the provider, and for how long funds can sit there. A short window is usually acceptable; the point is knowing rather than assuming.
Refunds are harder here#
Custodial providers can usually issue a refund from your balance with one action. Without a balance, a refund is a payment you construct and sign yourself, from the wallet holding the funds, at the current exchange rate.
That is workable and it needs a process before the first refund rather than during it. The refunds guide covers the shape of it, including why the price move between sale and refund lands on you.
Who should not be on this list#
A business without someone accountable for key custody. The risk you remove by going non-custodial is real, and the risk you take on is equally real and lands entirely inside your organisation.
A business needing bank currency on a schedule, for the reasons above. Both cases are better served by a custodial provider with published settlement terms, and choosing one deliberately is not a compromise.
What actually running your own node would mean#
Only BTCPay Server among the seven is software you install, and merchants searching for self-hosted often want exactly that. Running your own node means uptime, storage, reorg handling and address management as your problem rather than a vendor’s.
For most businesses the non-custodial services on this page deliver the property they actually wanted — nobody else holding the money — without any of that operational load.
Backups are the part that fails#
A wallet you control is a wallet you must be able to restore, and restoration is only proven by testing it. An untested backup is a belief rather than a backup.
Test recovery on a spare device before any real volume arrives, and again when the person who set it up leaves. The key security guide covers the minimum arrangement.
Refunds need a process first#
Without a provider balance, a refund is a payment you construct and sign yourself, from the wallet holding the funds, at the current rate.
That is workable and it needs deciding before the first refund rather than during it. The refunds guide covers why the price move between sale and refund lands on you.
What separates the top of this list?
NOWPayments scores 8.0 because the published asset list is the longest of any provider in this index, at 350+ currencies. Its weakest point is the opposite side of the same coin: conversion and payout costs are not published, so the all-in figure cannot be computed from public pages.
BTCPay Server sits at 7.7. Publishes a flat zero: no processing fee, no subscription and, in the project's own words, no middleman. Where it gives ground is that no fiat settlement of any kind, so a merchant who needs euros in a bank account needs a second provider as well.
A gap of less than half a point between two providers is inside the noise of any scoring method, this one included. When two entries are that close, decide on the constraint that disqualifies one of them rather than on the total.
What should you check before choosing from this list?
Whether the assets your customers actually hold are live for merchants in your country. Every provider here publishes a global list that is longer than the list available to you specifically, and none of them makes that gap easy to find. 5 of 9 providers on this list publish nothing about merchant verification, so plan onboarding time you cannot currently estimate.
